SHILLONG: KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Monday said the Council Executive Committee would prefer to have an independent probe if they are convinced that misappropriation of funds have taken place in the implementation of the Khasi Heritage Village project at Mawphlang.

“So far the EC has not held any detailed discussion on the matter. We discussed the matter in a nutshell during the first meeting of the Executive Committee last week,” Basaiawmoit told newsmen.

He, however, admitted that they have some doubts over the way the funds have been utilized in the project.

“But we would like to have a detailed discussion on this issue in the EC before arriving at any conclusion,” he said.

Basaiawmoit also said that they might go for a spot assessment at the construction site to determine if the amount which had been earmarked for a particular component of the project matches with the actual work which has taken place at the site.

To a query on whether the Engineering wing of the KHADC would be asked to conduct an assessment, Basaiawmoit said that he was not sure if the Engineering wing of the Council was competent enough to do the job.

“We would like to rope in some experts from outside to do the job since we would want to be sure if any misappropriation of funds has taken place,” he said.

When reminded that the present Deputy CEM Teinwell Dkhar was fully involved in the project since he was in charge of the Art and Culture department in the previous EC, Basaiawmoit reminded that all major decisions in the Council are taken by the CEM. “The EM may not be aware of all the decisions taken by the CEM,” he added.
