Tension grips Sonamura after attack on TMC leader

Agartala: Tension gripped Durgapur area of Sonamura of Tripura following miscreant attack on a physician and his wife, a leader of Trinamool Congress.
According to report, both of them were shifted to Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital in critical condition on Sunday.
This is the first political violence reported in the state during ensuing Lok Sabha poll to two parliamentary constituencies. Police said besides, Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) sufficient number of local police has been deployed in the localities to cease the tension.
Allegedly, Dr Rafiqul Islam (52), a physician and his wife Anamika Begam, a leader of Trinamool Congress were severely beaten by a group of CPI (M) cadres without any provocation in the local market.
“The miscreants charged me why I am working for Trinamool Congress and if I continue with the party, they will kill my family and reminded me that it is not West Bengal here CPI-M is the last resort to stay alive,” Begam told media in the hospital.
Meanwhile, police said the initial investigation revealed that it was a case of illegal occupation of ancestral property and construction of building.
However, police investigating the case as per the allegation had been lodged by the couple.
Three persons have so been arrested in connection with the incident.
Also, Senior Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal MLA Sabyasachi Dutta alleged that the cadres attacked them with shovel and iron rods, attempting them to kill and added the incident proved the political bankruptcy of the ruling CPI-M. He also claimed that CPI-M became violent with the erosion in their base in rural Tripura. (UNI)
