NONGSTOIN: The FKJGP Central Body along with the West Khasi Hills District Unit on Wednesday, visited the areas hit by the recent cyclone of Nongrangoi and Khliehmawlieh in West Khasi Hills District.
During the visit the FKJGP members distributed relief materials to those severely affected by the cyclone.
At Nongranoi and Khliehmawlieh villages, the FKJGP team led by Joe Marwein President (Central Body), N Khongsit Vice President (Central Body), Palwanbor Syiem President (West Khasi Hills Unit) and other members distributed 34 bundles of CGI sheets, 50 bags of rice and 50 blankets to those severely affected by the cyclone.
After the distribution, a brief meeting was held where Palwanbor Syiem said “The FKJGP is just an NGO and does not possess huge funds. However, in times of need we are doing our bit to help our brothers and sisters in need.”
Marwein said that the FKJGP would pursue the Government to provide various schemes and funds to the affected areas. He also highlighted that there were various flagship schemes of the Government like the IAY and others through which the affected families could restore their dwellings. Marwein also slammed the PWD for the pathetic road condition connecting Nongstoin and Umiap.
He said that he had been told that on the night of the cyclone, there were several people with vehicles that desired to help but owing to the bad roads they could not come to the aid of those affected. He said that though the road had been sanctioned 7- 8 years back, the road was yet to be completed.
Marwein also reminded the people that a similar cyclone had devastated Mawshynrut in West Khasi Hills last year where three lives were lost. This year a total of 16 villages were hit by the cyclone in which 51 households were completely devastated and had claimed four lives. The FKJGP also announced that their contribution of relief materials would continue in other cyclone affected areas of the district.
