SHILLONG: A Central Election Observer deputed in the State for Shillong parliamentary constituency was asked to return to his home state since the Election Commission of India was not satisfied with his performance.

State Chief Electoral Officer Prashant Naik informed that the poll observer Mohammad Afzal Bhat from the Jammu & Kashmir cadre was asked to proceed to his home state since his performance was found to be unsatisfactory.

According to Naik, the ECI will decide on what action is to be taken against the election observer.

The ECI has deputed another observer to take charge of the electioneering process in East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts.

While the ECI has been tight lipped on Bhat’s dismissal, State poll officials said that the Election department had lodged a complaint with the Commission against the observer for dereliction of duties.

The official, who was given charge of seven Assembly constituencies in Jaintia Hills, was supposed to be available in either of the two district headquarters in Jaintia Hills but he was allegedly found to be stationed in the State capital.
