One duped in cyber crime

SHILLONG: In yet another instance of cyber crime, a lady was allegedly duped of Rs 35,750 by a gang who promised lakhs of cash and a car.

One Renu Deb of Keating Road, Shillong lodged a complaint at Shillong Sadar PS that during the period from March 29 to April 3, 2014, three persons Rajiv Mishra, Rahul Ranjan Singh and Shiv Shankar Singh called her from two different mobile phones and informed that she had won a prize money of Rs. 6,50,000 and a Tata Indica car.

They also asked her to deposit Rs. 35,750 to claim the prize and accordingly, Deb deposited the amount but she did not receive the prize till date.

As per police statistics, twenty cases of cyber-crimes were reported in the city in the year 2012 followed by thirty four cases in 2013 and this year till February eight cases have been registered and city police have sounded an alarm over the increasing cases of cyber-crime.
