33 MLAs in this Lok Sabha election fray: assembly bypoll likely
Lucknow: Chances of another round of election, a “mini-election”, are high as a total of 33 MLAs are also in fray in this Lok Sabha polls.
The candidature of the state legislators might leave several assembly seats vacant, necessiatating by-polls from these seats.
The maximum of 13 MLAs in the poll fray are of the Samajwadi Party, followed by eight of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), six of the Congress, two of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and one each of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the Apna Dal.
Apna Dal legislator Anupriya Patel is contesting from Mirzapur Lok Sabha seat in association with the BJP. She is the MLA from Rohniya assembly segment in Varanasi.
Radhav Lakhanpal is the BJP candidate from Sadar seat in Saharanpur parliamentary constituency, while BJP legislature party leader Hukum Singh is contesting from Kairana Lok Sabha seat.
Similarly, Kunwar Bhartendu Singh, the BJP MLA from Bijnore Sadar seat, is the Lok Sabha candidate from Bijnore. BJP’s Dr Nepal Singh, who is leader of party in UP Legislative Council, is in the fray from Rampur Lok Sabha seat, while Uma Bharti, the BJP MLA from Charkhari in Mahoba, is contesting from Jhansi parliamentary constituency. Nomination of 3 candidates rejected
Chennai: Ihe Election Commission on Monday rejected 32e nominations of Nilgiris (Reserved) BJP candidate Gurumoorthy, AAP candidate Rani and Chidambaram (Reserved) PMK candidate Manirathnam for the April 24 Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.
The scrutiny of papers began on Monday.
The Electoral Officer in Chidamabaram Saravana Kumar rejected the papers of Manirathinam, since his nomination lacked required documents. his wife Sudha had filed as ‘dummy’ candidate from Chidambaram. There was confusion over accepting her papers as she had not furnished the required letter that she had relinquished the post of Nattramangalam Panchayat president that she was holding till now. She was given time till this evening to produce the same.
BJP candidate for Nilgiris Gurumoorthy’s papers were rejected.
According to poll officials, delay in filing the nomination papers was the reason for rejection.
Thanjkavur AAP candidate Kuzhandhaivel’s papers were rejected as he did not follow the norms of the Election Commission. He was proposed by a set of ten people, who don’t belong’ to the constituency. Hence, his papers were disqualified. (UNI)
Heavy snowfall in Kashmir
Srinagar: The high-altitude areas of Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall, while the plains including Srinagar were lashed by incessant rains for the third day today, resulting in a marked drop in the mercury.
The upper reaches, including the famous ski resort of Gulmarg, Pahalgam and 3880-metre-high holy cave shrine of Armarnath witnessed a fresh spell of snowfall this morning, officials said.
They said though the snowfall was mild, it was preceded by heavy rains which also lashed plain areas for the third day today, resulting in a sharp increase in the water level of major rivers, rivulets, lakes and other water bodies. However, the water level monitored in river Jhelum at up and down stream was still several feet below the danger mark and there was no immediate threat of floods, the officials said.
They said the water level in river Jhelum at Sangam in south Kashmir was 14.25 feet– 7 feet below the danger mark–, while it was recorded at 12.5 feet– 4.5 feet below the danger mark– at Ram Munshi Bagh here.
Many roads in Srinagar, which recorded 38.7 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours till 8.30 AM today, were waterlogged prompting the government to press its men and machines for the dewatering operation. As a result of the wet weather, the maximum temperature in the Valley has dipped four degrees below normal, while the minimum was recorded at 6.4 degree Celsius — one degree below normal, a spokesman of the MET office said. Govt orders repair of Yatra route
Dehradun: Uttarakhand government has ordered completion of all road repair and reconstruction works along Char Dham Yatra route well before the start of the annual pilgrimage in May this year.
Directives to this effect were issued by Chief Seceretary Subhash Kumar soon after his return from a tour of Rudraprayag district to review the progress of road reconstruction work under way in the area.
Rudraparayg was one of the three districts apart from Uttarkashi and Chamoli in Garhwal region hit hard by the natural calamity in Uttarakhand last year.
The chief secretary said the Char Dham routes should be repaired well before the scheduled start of the annual pilgrimage in May and the alternative motor roads should be made operational by the end of this month.
Progress of work on this front will be reviewed again at the end of this month and no negligence on part of officials in this regard will be tolerated, the chief secretary warned. Rs 12 crore have been sanctioned for the reconstruction of an alternative route to Kedarnath between Guptkashi and Mayali which will be operational soon. (PTI)
Kagal police arrests four youths
Kolhapur: The Kagal police have arrested four youths and seized four live bombs from them in the district.
According to police, they had received an information about a gang which had been using modern technique for couple of months to prepare bombs.
Last evening, the police laid a trap at a petrol pump in the town and arrested four youths, seized as many live bombs and electronic materials used in bomb preparation valued at Rs more than 25 lakh.
Later, the police defused the bombs at Kagal-Lingnur-Dumala Mal under tight security.
The arrested have been identified as Anjikya Manohar Bhopale(22), an engineering student; Aniket Bhivaji Mali(22), a wireman; both residents of Chokak village in Hatkanangale Tehsil of this district, Nilesh Babanrao Patil (20) and Anil Popat Kharse (28), both from Kabnur in Ichalkaranji town.
The incident came as a shocker in view of the April 17 Lok Sabha elections in the district. (UNI)
