Dispute over community land under Raid Tynring

SHILLONG: In a land dispute case, four houses located at Wahswat village under Raid Tynring were demolished by a group of persons numbering around 80 hailing from four villages, Lumdiengngan, Mawkdup, Wahmyntait and Kyrdem in the East Khasi Hills-Ri Bhoi border on Monday evening.

Wahswat is a community land under Raid Tynring.

The villagers went to Wahswat village under Umiam police station at around 5 pm on Tuesday and destroyed four houses belonging to Thyrmai Nongrum, Iohkynti Marboh, Shida Nongrum and Kjarsila Nongrum. The affected villagers told reporters on Tuesday that it was after the people of four villages lost the land dispute case that they resorted to violence.

The High Court verdict of March 31, this year, which was pending for nearly 14 years against the Sordar of Raid Tynring, was in favour of the Sordar.

According to the victims, the attackers were led by Rangbah Shnong of Mawkdup, Wanshes Nongdhar, a school teacher and the secretary of Dorbar Shnong, Kyrdon Shylla. Another person of the village identified as Jrek Mylliem also accompanied them.

The affected families had been the residents of Wahswat for long after they got permission from the Sordar of Raid Tynring Ikom Diengdoh to stay there.

The victims filed an FIR at Khapmara police outpost, Umiam on Tuesday.
