TURA: The Women’ Vigilance Group from Baija and Chidekgre in East Garo Hills have jointly made a complaint to the excise department of the same district against the illegal selling of liquor in the area.
In its complaint letter submitted to the concerned department the women’s group informed that all along the PWD Road beginning from the Forest Training Centre in Baija up to the Tura-Songsak junction under Rongrenggre reserved Forest, illegal sale of liquor was taking place openly at many small shops constructed by the side of the road as if the monitoring department did not even exist.
They also informed that there had been several reports in the recent past about fights and quarrels breaking out and immoral activities being committed in the area.
Stating that such activities including the illegal sale of liquor needs to be checked immediately, the women’s group wondered why the concerned department was not carrying out regular checks in the area to prevent the illegal activities.
“We are surprised that the Excise Department has remained inactive to the happenings. We have never seen any checks or seizures being carried out by the department in the area although the illegal activity is being committed right in front of their very eyes for all to see.”
“They should act immediately because that is what they are getting paid their salaries for,” the President of the vigilance group, Edina D Shira said.
