TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Tikrikilla Regional Unit has alleged that the incomplete construction and expansion of various AMPT Roads in Tikrikilla and regional bridges and culverts were causing great inconveniences to the people as well as rampant accidents in the same route.

The president of the regional unit issued a press statement on Saturday and informed that deep holes which had been dug for the purpose of constructing culverts and bridges had been left wide open with no signboards to indicate that they were their putting the lives of people plying their vehicles on the road at risk.

The GSU president also claimed that the already constructed roads of the region also did not meet the required criteria with the heights of culverts and bridges not up to standard causing high risk for all vehicles plying on the road.

The union’s President cited an example of one particular bridge 100 metres away from Nagargaon Market in Tikrikilla and said, “There have been many minor accidents on the said bridge due to the height of the bridge not being level with the road.”

Stating that the unnecessary delay by concerned Contractors to complete the projects, i.e. the construction of roads, bridges and culverts was a threat to pedestrians and vehicles alike the union urged the contractors to complete all pending works in time and to put up signboards at all incomplete sites failing which it threatened to serve a legal notice on the erring contractors.

The union has also urged the concerned Departmental Heads to take stock of the ongoing constructions in a proper manner and to check if the work is being done as per the given prescribed norms.
