SHILLONG: Public transportation facilities in the city are set to get a major boost with as many as 240 additional SPTS buses proposed to be introduced in Shillong.

Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has informed that the buses would be introduced soon since Meghalaya Urban Development Authority would be floating a tender for procurement of the buses.

MUDA had earlier called for tender but it was cancelled with the imposition of the election model code of conduct Reacting to a query about the services of the 120 SPTS buses which are currently operating in the city, Lyngdoh said that apart from minor hiccups, the buses have largely helped the residents.

“Whenever any fault is brought to our notice, we try to zero down on it,” she said while adding that the decision to hand over the buses to private groups has helped in plugging the revenue leakage.

Lyngdoh also admitted that the SPTS buses were not yielding much profit for the Government.
