AMPATI: South West Garo Hills Police on Thursday night arrested a gang of dacoits “who had created havoc in the district in the recent past.”

Acting on a tip-off from the villagers about the movement of a few doubtful persons in Zikzak area, a team led by SI John Sangma swung into action and arrested the gang of six while they were on their way to commit robbery in the nearby villages.

The arrested dacoits have been identified as Borit D. Sangma, Jecky S. Sangma, Mandesh G. Momin and Watting S. Sangma from Thakuranbari, Silgrak M. Sangma from Latrigre and Johan A. Marak from Dangganatong.

SWGH Superintendent of Police, R. Muthu on Friday lauded the villagers of the district for their timely inputs that led to the arrests.

A pistol with live ammunition, black masks and mobile handsets were recovered from their possession. On further lead, a huge amount of cash was also recovered from their houses, Muthu said.

On May 5 last, the same gang had committed robbery at Sindilgre village and took away huge amount of cash at gunpoint.

The gang has also been responsible for a series of dacoities that took place in the district, Muthu said adding that raids and intensive operations are being conducted to nab their accomplices.
