NONGSTOIN: Kardius Syiemlieh, son of Late Dennis Nongsiej, one of the four victims of the infamous Langpih firing on May 14, 2010, who had been appointed as a peon in the DC’s Office in West Khasi Hills District on compassionate grounds, was unceremoniously shunted out on February 28 last.

Following the firing incident at Langpih and the massive criticism across the State, the State Government had assured jobs to one member each of the victims’ families. As promised Kardius Syiemlieh was appointed as a peon in the DC’s office in Nongstoin on September 15, 2011, providing financial respite to the aggrieved family.

However, the family has now been let in the lurch following the termination order which cited that the reason for the termination was the absorption of the DRDA Grade IV employees into the regular establishment. ) A distraught Kardius met the MLA cum MDC of the area, K.P. Pangniang, and sought his immediate intervention. Pangniang has assured Kardius that he would help him get back his job, but nothing concrete has materialized thus far.

Kardius, while speaking to The Shillong Times, said, “I am the only bread earner in my family and being the eldest I have to support my six brothers and sisters, besides my ailing mother. With the salary that I was receiving, I also resumed my schooling and am now studying in Class X. Now all hopes have been dashed with my termination and my family has been ruined for life.”
