BJP wave in Shillong urban

SHILLONG: The Modi wave seemed to have worked in urban centres of the Shillong Lok Sabha seat with gave BJP candidate Shibun Lyngdoh securing most of his votes from the area.

In North Shillong, Shibun Lyngdoh topped the chart with 5165 votes followed by Pala with 4233 votes, Basaiawmoit with 2994 votes and Paul Lyngdoh with 1955 votes.

Shibun Lyngdoh also stole the show in Paul Lyngdoh’s home constituency, West Shillong, securing 6591 votes while the UDP candidate had to be content with 3921 votes. Pala secured 3407 votes in the area while Basaiawmoit got 1475 votes.

But it was in the South Shillong constituency that Shibun was far ahead of the others with 10534 votes. Pala garnered 4645 votes in the constituency while Basaiawmoit got 1509 votes. Paul Lyngdoh got only 1092 votes in the same constituency.

State BJP general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said the party will analyze its performance in the Shillong seat even as he expressed satisfaction at the saffron party’s performance in urban areas.

Shibun Lyngdoh also garnered a record 31975 votes for the BJP in Jaintia Hills behind Basaiawmoit’s 32023 and Pala’s 51671.

In Pynthorumkhrah which is held by the congress minister AL Hek, (former BJP MLA), the BJP candidate Shibun Lyngdoh stood first with 6984 votes. Congress candidate Vincent Pala secured only 4183 votes followed by Rev. PBM Basaiawmoit with 3814 votes.

In the East Shillong assembly constituency, Shibun Lyngdoh got 4361 votes, second only to sitting MP Vincent Pala who secured 5293 votes in the constituency. UDP candidate Paul Lyngdoh had to do with 1650 votes in the area while Independent candidate PBM Basaiawmoit garnered 1543 votes.

Other centres

Pala dominated the Nongthymmai assembly constituency with 5956 votes but here too Shibun Lyngdoh managed to retain the second spot with 4576 votes. Paul Lyngdoh managed 2874 votes in the constituency while Basaiawmoit secured 2818 votes.

In Mawlai, Rev. PBM Basaiawmoit who was supported by both HSPDP and KHNAM secured the maximum of 7071 votes followed by Pala (5996) and Paul Lyngdoh(3697)

In Mylliem, the constituency of Congress legislator Ronnie Lyngdoh, who was one of the aspirants for the party ticket for Shillong Lok Sabha seat, Pala got the maximum votes of 4929 votes. Basaiawmoit came close with 4687 votes.

Interestingly in Nongkrem which is the constituency of HSPDP legislator and KHADC CEM Ardent Basaiawmoit, the Congress candidate Pala got 6187 votes compared to the 5976 votes secured by Rev. Basaiawmoit.
