Nagaland Minister Nienu thanks people for electing Rio
Kohima: Nagaland Minister of Roads & Bridges and Parliamentary Affairs Kuzholuzo Neinu on Monday expressed gratitude to Nagas for reposing their faith on Naga Peoples Front-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland consensus candidate and former Chief Minister Niephiu Rio in the recently concluded parliamentary election. In a statement Nienu said the huge winning margin clearly indicated the popularity enjoyed by Rio for his leadership qualities. Acknowledging Rio, as a leader who had successfully led Nagas from the front for over a decade as a clear indication of his towering leadership skills, he has affirmed that Rio would continue to remain his ‘mentor and leader’ even in the days to come. Also while seeking his continued support he prayed that God would continue to guide the lone Naga MP as he takes on new responsibilities to insure that Naga people’s rights were protected. He also exuded confidence that Nagas would see better days in the days to come as Rio took on new responsibilities at the Center and NPF-led DAN Government in the state undergoing a smooth transition of power with T R Zeliang heading the Government. UCM, private schools to help students affected by AFSPA
Imphal: United Committee Manipur (UCM) and private schools of Manipur will be providing free education to all students affected by Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from one 4 to 10. Children dependent on victims of the Great June Uprising 2001 will also be covered under the scheme. UCM president Y Nabachandra said his organisation will bear the expenses of uniform, books for all the children. UCM and All Manipur Recognised Private Schools Welfare Association have decided to help the children as large numbers of sole bread earners had died during the June 2001 pprising for protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity and due to widespread killing of people under AFSPA. Kin of people who got government job will not be covered under the policy. (UNI)
Sumi Hoho to continue to snap ties with NSCN-IM
Kohima: The Sumi Hoho in its Executive Meeting held on May 23 at Sumi Hoho Ki in Zunheboto town which has reaffirmed previous resolutions to abrogate with NSCN-IM. In a press statement on Monday Sumi Hoho President Toniho Yepthomi and General Secretary Vihuto Asumi said the meeting reaffirmed the January 7, 2014 Sumi General Session resolutions which included declaring December 28 as ‘Sumi Martyrs’ Day’ to be observed yearly and the burial place to be called ‘Sumi Martyrs’ Park’. Other resolutions included: ‘The relationship between Sumi and the NSCN-IM is hereby declared abrogated and no taxation in any form shall be paid to the NSCN-IM. If and when any act of violence or desecration is inflicted upon Sumi individual or community in the coming days, the entire Sumi populace will retaliate. The NSCN-IM will not be allowed to set up ‘Designated Camp’ within the entire inhabited areas of Sumi land.’ The meeting also affirmed the January 15, 2008 Sumi Public Rally Resolution, which was further strengthened at the Sumi general session on August 9, 2011 declaring the entire Sumi inhabited area as the ‘Peace Zone’. The Hoho further lauded the ACAUT Nagaland for the movement against corruption and unabated taxation which, it said, is a pro-people fight. (UNI)
Mizo boy, missing for 5 years, rescued from Haryana
Aizawl: A 14-year-old Mizo boy, who was taken away from his poor parents by some people promising better life five years ago, was rescued from an ashram in Haryana, Mizoram Child Welfare Committee said here today. Ravi Joy, taken away from his parents by some unidentified persons promising better life and education when he was 9 years of age, was rescued by CWC from an ashram in Haryana and brought him to Kolasib town yesterday. The poor family had not seen their son during this time and did not know where he had been taken, CWC Kolasib District Chairman Happy Laldingliani said. The Haryana CWC spotted Joy in the ashram and informed its Mizoram counterpart which brought him to neighbouring Hailakandi in Assam along with five Tripura boys, who were also rescued from the same ashram. Kolasib District Child Protection Unit brought the boy from Hailakandi to Kolasib and kept him at an orphanage before handing him over to his parents, Laldingliani said. (PTI)
Nagaland to observe World No Tobacco Day on May 31
Kohima: The District Tobacco Control Cell Dimapur (DTCCD) would be observing ‘World No Tobacco Day’ by organising essay competition among the schools (class X and below) May 31 at Holy Cross School on the topic ‘Harmful effects of smokeless tobacco on health’. According to an official statement on Monday the topic has been chosen in view of high prevalence rate of smokeless tobacco use among the school children in Nagaland. The prize for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position will be Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively sponsored by the Indian Dental Association Dimapur Branch. All the participants will also be awarded with a certificate. (UNI)
