‘Doubts’ over Deborah’s role
SHILLONG: Congress Minister and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Deborah Marak is under the scanner of the party for the dismal result of the party candidate Daryl William Cheran Momin in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections in Williamnagar Assembly segment.
While NPP candidate Purno A Sangma secured 11961 votes, Daryl got only 6540 votes in Williamnagar Assembly segment, which is represented by Marak.
In the recent news conference in Shillong, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that whether party workers at Williamnagar were actively involved in campaigning for the party candidate needed to be examined.
A party source added that the poor performance of Daryl in Williamnagar is already known to the AICC.
The source, however, said that Rongjeng constituency which also falls under East Garo Hills District had always been the stronghold of PA Sangma. In Rongjeng represented by Sengnam Marak of the Congress, Daryl secured the lowest (4431 votes) while PA Sangma polled 12329 votes.
In other two Assembly constituencies under East Garo Hills — Kharkutta and Songsak — the Congress candidate could not get majority of votes. Songsak is represented by NPP’s Nihim Shira and Kharkutta by Cherak Momin of the Congress.
The constituencies where Daryl outperformed PA Sangma are Tikrikilla (represented by Independent Michael Sangma), Rajabala (Independent Ashahel D Shira), Selsella (Clement Marak), Rangsakona (Zenith Sangma), Ampati (Chief Minister Mukul Sangma) and Mahendraganj (CM’s wife Dikkanchi Shira).
