Chairman of Assam Police Accountability Commission appointed

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday approved the appointment of Justice (retd) P K Mushahary as Chairman of the Assam Police Accountability Commission, official sources said. Besides the Chairman, retired Meghalaya DGP Sibabrata Kakoty and retired Assam Additional Chief Secretary Parul Devi Das were appointed as members of the Commission, they said. The Chief Minister directed the Chief Secretary also to start the process for appointment of both the Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioner, sources added. (PTI)

Kameng Dolo takes oath as Protem Speaker of Arunachal Assembly

Itanagar: Veteran Congress leader Kameng Dolo was on Friday sworn in as the Protem Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly paving way for swearing-in of the newly elected members of the 60-member house. Dolo was appointed as the Protem Speaker by the Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma, yesterday. He was administered the oath by the Governor at Raj Bhawan here in the presence of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and other elected MLAs. The swearing in of the newly elected MLAs is likely to be held on June 2 next. Dolo is among the 11 Congress MLAs who won unopposed in the April 9 Assembly elections in the state. (PTI)

48-hour general strike affects life

Imphal: 48-hour statewide bandh which began on Friday morning partially affected life in the state. Ikok Ningthou Jatabung Semgat Sagat Lup Joint Action Committee imposed a 48-hour general strike from 0600 hrs to protest the firing incident by some individuals on police and residents of the area at Lairoi. Mayang Imphal in Imphal West district on May 25. A historical and religious site of the Manipuris were allegedly encroached by some people which led to a stand off. Road at Mayang Imphal areas were blocked by protestors. Police personnel were rushed in large numbers in the area to avert any untoward incidents as the attackers and the victims belonged to different communities. The protestors demanded arrest of all those who resorted to firing to the police and others who inspected the area.  (UNI)

NLFT ultras surrender in Tripura after fleeing from Bangladesh

Agartala: Four insurgents of outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), who fled from their hideouts in neighbouring Bangladesh, have surrendered to Assam Rifles in North Tripura district, the police said on Friday. The ultras identified as Parimal Debbarma, Mohan Kumar Koloi, Dayananda Tripura and Bibhas Tripura surrendered at the Assam Rifles camp at Anandabazar on Thursday and deposited one carbine and one pistol. The police said the ultras were involved in kidnapping and extortion. During interrogation, the ultras said that their outfit was facing funds crunch as their operations were almost stopped due to deployment of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), a paramilitary force specially trained in anti-insurgency operations in strategic positions and proactive action of security forces in Bangladesh against them. Tripura shares 856 km long border with Bangladesh.(PTI)

UPDS pro-talks faction functionary shot dead

Diphu (Assam): Deputy commander-in-chief of the pro-talks faction of the United People’s Democratic Solidarity Rupsin Teron has been shot dead by suspected militants in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. Teron was standing in front of a paan (betel) shop Thursday night at Baithalanshu in West Karbi Anglong police district when some persons, suspected to be militants, came in an auto-rickshaw and opened fire, killing him on the spot, Superindent of Police N N Goswami said. The United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), which came into being in 1999 in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, had signed a cease-fire agreement for one year with the Union Government on May 23, 2002. This agreement led to the UPDS splitting into two factions – anti-talks and pro-talks. While the anti-talks faction decided to continue with its insurgency activity rechristening itself as the Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), the pro-talks faction opted for talks with the state and Union government. The pro-talks faction held six rounds of peace talks with the state and Union govenrment representatives between 2002 and 2006 before pulling out of the talks process complaining of lack of progress on its core demands.
