West Bengal governor calls on Modi

New Delhi: West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan Saturday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here, an official statement said. The meeting was described as a “courtesy call”. “Governor of West Bengal M.K. Narayanan called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 7, Race Course Road today (Saturday),” the statement said. The official twitter handle of the prime minister’s office also posted a picture of Modi and Narayanan shaking hands. (IANS)

BJP needs to explain power cuts in Delhi: Kejriwal

New Delhi: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal Saturday sought an explanation from the BJP government over the power cuts across the national capital and asked it to take “immediate action”. “Major power cuts across Delhi. BJP needs to explain and take immediate action,” the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief said in a tweet. Delhiites have been facing a tough time due to the soaring mercury and power outages in various parts of the city. (IANS)

Mumbai Metro inauguration today

Mumbai: Mumbai will enter a world class era of commuting with the inauguration of the Mumbai Metro Sunday, a top official said here Saturday. RInfra’s Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd CEO Abhay Mishra made the announcement at a media conference here on Saturday morning. Accordingly, from Sunday the 11.4 km long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar east-west corridor with 12 stations en route on the elevated line will become operational, proving to be a boon for Mumbaikars, especially with the monsoon around the corner. WB Transport Minister flags off long distance buses with bio-toilets

Kolkata: State Transport Department has decided to attach bio-toilets in all long distance buses operated by the state-run transport corporations, state Transport Minister Madan Mitra said. On a pilot basis, the South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) has already attached bio-toilets in two buses that were flagged off on Friday from Esplanade by the minister. The minister asked the principal secretary of the transport department, Mr Alapan Bandopadhyay, for its speedy implementation. Biotoilets will be attached in all buses that cover more than 125 km on a single route, Mr Mitra today said. Some seats might come down for attaching the toilet in the buses, but passengers will be benefited. SBSTC introduced two AC buses from Esplanade bus depot. They will ply from the Esplanade bus depot to various destinations in south Bengal. The State Transport Department will set up an AC bus terminus near Thakurpukur. The department has sanctioned Rs 10 crore for setting up the terminus. The terminus will have cafeteria, a cyber cafe and a restaurant. The SBSTC will set up another bus terminus near Pailan in South 24 Parganas. (PTI)

Stones pelted at Kollam MP’s house

Kollam: Miscreants pelted stones on Kollam Lok Sabha member N.K. Premachandran’s house here and pasted posters threatening him. The parliamentarian, who is in New Delhi, told IANS over phone that the newspaper delivery boy first saw the damage to his house and the posters early Saturday. “Since I am in Delhi and my wife is in the state capital, our house that came under attack was locked,” he said. “The window panes have been broken,” the MP said, adding his house staff have recorded their statements with the police. “I am returning to Kollam June 10,” added Premachandran. He said the posters on his house walls were threatening in nature, saying Premachandran is a deserter and a renegade, as he is now the disciple of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The police have begun a probe into the matter. Premachandran, a senior member of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), was an ally of the CPI-M led Left Democratic Front for the past three decades. (IANS)

Guerrillas attack police post in Kashmir

Srinagar: Guerrillas attacked a police post in Jammu and Kashmir’s Badgam district late Friday, an official said on Saturday, adding the militants injured a constable and decamped with three rifles. “Militants late last (Friday) evening attacked the guard barrack at Pakherpora (Badgam),” a senior police officer told IANS here. “Two militants entered the barrack where they hit constable Shabir Ahmad with an iron rod and fired at him. Militants escaped with three self-loading rifles (SLRs),” the officer added. The guards were posted at the local shrine in Pakherpora. The injured constable was shifted to a hospital where doctors said his condition was critical. (IANS)
