SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s statement in the Assembly that the State Police cannot match with the militants in terms of sophisticated fire power has come under severe criticism of the Opposition UDP.

UDP working president and former Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong, on Sunday, said the statement will demoralize the police forces and would give a ‘psychological advantage’ to the militants.

“We are all shocked at the statement and several right thinking people consider it as very serious and erroneous,” Lanong said.

Lanong said the well trained battalion personnel would be demoralized by the statement that is meant to show the militant groups in an advantageous position. “Where will the citizens go for protection if the police do not have the required fire power as compared to the militants,” Lanong questioned.

He also said the statement amounts to violation of the Official Secrets Act “as the Chief Minister is disclosing the weaponry in the State’s arsenal”.
