NEW DELHI: The Centre has agreed to consider a proposal to grant autonomy to North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in the line with AIIMS here and six such other institutes coming up in other parts of the country.
Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan gave this assurance to former Union Minister and MP from Shillong Vincent H Pala when the latter called on him on Thursday.
“Six new AIIMS-like institutions, which were started elsewhere in India much after NEIGRIHMS, have been granted autonomy through an Act of Parliament from their very inception,” Pala pointed out to the Minister.
NEIGRIHMS is planning to start innovative courses in various Paramedical, Medical Science and Biotechnology courses for number of years but they could not do so because the Institute is governed by MCI regulations, Pala said.
Autonomous character of the institute would also help it to generate technical manpower in the region for self sufficiency, he added.
