TURA: The two-day dawn-to-dusk non-cooperation movement (shutdown) called by Garo Hills based NGOs that began on Thursday morning, concluded on Friday at 5 pm with no untoward incidents being reported even as the protest closure was complete in all five districts.
The non-cooperation movement was spearheaded by the GSU, FKJGP, NESO and other students and social groups demanding a CBI or a judicial probe into the twin custodial deaths and compensation for an alleged extra-judicial killing in Williamnagar during anti-militancy operations.
The day-long closure on Friday was total with Tura, Williamnagar, Baghmara, Ampati and Resubelpara towns remaining under a virtual shutdown with no vehicular traffic on the roads and all educational institutions, banks and business houses remaining closed.
Barring Williamnagar in East Garo Hills, most towns were deserted with little or no visible sign of volunteers on the streets.
In Williamnagar, a group of student volunteers stood guard outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office for the second day to enforce the non-cooperation movement and thereby prevent the government employees from attending to their duties. With no employee reporting for work it was left to the officers and magistrates to supervise the law and order duties.
