Cops rescue man beaten for ‘practising witchcraft’

SHILLONG: Police on Tuesday rescued a person who was seriously injured after some villagers in Sohra assaulted him for allegedly practicing witchcraft. As many as 11 persons were arrested in connection with the crime.

After a lull people taking law into their hands in the name of witchcraft has again surfaced in East Khasi Hills.

According to police, at around 5.45 pm on Tuesday, residents of Mawmyrsiang, Mawjrong under Sohra police station assaulted a middle aged man alleging him of practicing witchcraft.

As a result, he sustained serious injuries and was shifted to Mawjrong public health centre by police. Later, he was shifted to Civil Hospital, Shillong.

Eleven people including the headman and secretary of Mawmyrsiang villlage and a woman were picked by the police in connection with the crime. The victim, a stranger, was in a field when the villagers branded him as one who practices witchcraft and assaulted him.

After getting information about the incident, police teams from Shillong and Sohra along with a magistrate rushed to the village and rescued the victim who sustained serious injuries.

“The district police is committed to deal with such illegal acts by villagers with all firmness,” East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang asserted.
