SHILLONG: The Dorbar Kur Pyllun Nandah Syiem, Hima Bhowal Syiemship, Mawsynram Block has opposed the decision of KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to abolish the right of the clan to be a party to the selection process of the acting Syiem of Hima Bhowal Syiemship.

During a general meeting held recently, Dorbar Kur Nandah Syiem secretary, JN Syiem said that the traditional body will oppose the move by Basaiawmoit to bring an ‘ordinance’ to abolish the right of the clan to give consent to the selection of the acting Syiem of the Syiemship during the upcoming budget session of the Council which is scheduled to begin from June 23.

“The Executive Committee of the KHADC is planning to amend the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Nomination and election of the Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Myntri, Basan and Rangbah Shnong of Bhowal Syiemship) Act, 2008 by deleting Section 9 (i) and (ii) which states that the Dorbar Kur has the right to elect the acting Syiem,” Syiem said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

“At present, the acting Syiem comes from the Syiem clan. He (Basaiawmoit) wants to appoint the acting Syiem from outside the clan by bringing an amendment to the Act,” the Dorbar Kur Nandah Syiem secretary said. He, however, lauded the court for issuing a stay order on the decision of the KHADC to forcefully remove Kynsai N Syiem as the Acting Syiem of the Syiemship.
