The Centre has already dispatched 19 companies of additional central paramilitary forces to the disturbed Garo Hills and will send more forces if needed, Rijiju told Meghalaya’s Minster for Information and Public Relations, AL Hek during their meeting here on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. David A Nongrum accompanied Hek during the meeting.

Rijiju will soon visit the disturbed Garo Hills region to gain first-hand knowledge of the situation there.

Hek apprised the Union minister of the overall situation in Meghalaya, particularly in the Garo Hills, where GNLA and other militant outfits have unleashed a region of terror.

The situation has become particularly volatile due to the emergence of a plethora of extremist outfits other than the GNLA and ANVC-B.

Rijiju also intimated Hek that

) he was scheduled to visit Meghalaya on June 23 but had to postpone the same since he had to attend a crucial meeting on security in Thailand.

He, however, made an assurance that soon after his return from Thailand, he would tour Meghalaya, Hek told The Shillong Times after the meeting.

Besides, their meeting with Rijiju, Hek and Nongrum also called on Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Smriti Irani, and apprised her of the problems in the education sector in the Hill State.
