SHILLONG: The newly formed Anti Corruption league based in New Bhaitbari, West Garo Hills has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately intervene to address the concerns of the people of Garo Hills due to the rise in insurgency.
In the memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister on Friday, the League said that insurgency is at its peak in Garo Hills and the State Machinery has failed to protect the life and liberty of the people.
“Most of us have to live in constant fear and retaliation. Both tribals and non-tribals are at the receiving end and the Government seems to be not sincere in listening to the plight of the people”, general secretary, Central Executive Committee of League identified as Mostapha Kabir said.
According to the league, in the last three years, the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya has seen plagued with violence. Several militant outfits have meted out inhumane torture to the people without caste creed and religion. Kidnapping, extortion is all time high.
Narrating the June 3 incident of killing of 35-year-old Josbina Sangma and the subsequent killing of an auto rickshaw driver at Ampati, Meghalaya Chief Minister’s home constituency on June 8, the League said that there are many cases of such gruesome acts, where militants have killed people as per their whims and fancies.
“Meghalaya police has been able to arrest and kill many militants in encounters over the past three years. But the militants have become vociferous as they have retaliated with equal force. The peace talks with the outfits will be futile exercise as most of the outfits have no ideology. Despite talks with ANVC for over a decade, there was emergence of ANVC-B”, the League said.
The organization also appealed the Prime Minister to protect the fundamental and human rights of the people of Meghalaya.
