TURA: A hardcore militant of the United A’chik Liberation Army who was arrested for arms smuggling and in custody has escaped from the Tura Civil Hospital early Monday morning.

Seven police constables deputed to guard him have been placed under suspension, informed Tura police sources.

The UALA militant Rexbriller R Marak (28) hailing from Nangalbibra area of South Garo Hills was arrested by North Garo Hills police on June 16 from Kharkutta.

He had been involved in the supply of weapons to various militant outfits in the Garo Hills region.

The accused was admitted to the government hospital in Tura for medical treatment when he made the daring escape.

The militant had entered the general toilet to relieve himself at around 4:30 in the morning and quietly slipped away after escaping through the toilet ventilation.

At the time of his arrest he was not bound in handcuffs since there is a court ruling that prohibits the use of cuffs on suspects.
