Chennai preacher beaten up in city

SHILLONG: Unidentified miscreants assaulted a Christian preacher from Chennai near Mawlai-Mawtadbaki bus stand in city on Saturday night.

The preacher, identified as Kevin John Lazarus, who is pursuing his MDIV in Chennai’s Lake View Theological College was in Meghalaya for his Summer Ministry and the incident happened when he was on his way to home after attending Church service at Jaiaw.

Describing the incident, Lazarus said that a person, waiting on the pavement, called him and out of nothing started throwing punches on him. Later a few more boys joined attacker, he added.

An FIR in this regard has been lodged.

When contacted, SP (City) Vivek Syiem said that police so far has not been able to identify the attackers. The SP also said, “It appears to be a case of racism as there is no other reason to attack a person except the fact that he is a non-tribal. But police cannot say anything at the moment about the case.”
