Rympei Jingshai School for Special Education

NONGSTOIN: Reacting to the story of The Shillong Times, MDC of Nongstoin, L G Nongsiej visited the Rympei Jingshai School for Special Education (Education for the Special Need) and promised to donate an amount of Rs 1,50,000.

A short meeting was held at the school which was attended by Nongsiej along with the faculty and the parents of the children. In the meeting, Alvin Nongrum, Principal of the school said he was proud to have such faculty members who worked tirelessly for the children. He also highlighted the financial constraints of the school and added that without a building of their own it was difficult to make special arrangements for the children.

He said that he had already mentioned earlier that he was ready to donate a portion of his land for the construction of the school building and was awaiting funds to initiate the construction of the building. Nongrum also requested the MDC to provide the monthly salary to faculty members of the school who were working voluntarily.

Nongsiej in his address said he was thankful to the Principal and the faculty members for carrying on this noble deed. He also said he appreciated the efforts of the parents, who enrolled their children to the school. Nongsiej said the school was the only one of its kind in Nongstoin and was a blessing to the parents of the differently abled.

If the school did not exist, Nongsiej said the parents would have to take their children to Shillong for their education, which would not only be an expensive affair but would also mean that their wards would have to accompany them there. Nongsiej promised to donate the school with Rs 1.50 lakh soon. Replying to the request of the Principal, Nongsiej said he did not possess the power to provide salary to teachers. However, he assured that he would talk to the Education Department to assist the school with all possible help.

Informing the parents, Nongsiej said the Govt of Meghalaya provided a 3% reservation for the disabled in all the departments of the state.

He said in Shillong, there were many educated disabled persons, who were employed in various capacities of the state govt. He said this reservation was a good opportunity for them to secure their future and that the parents should make all efforts to make their children independent.

Pointing out to one of the cases of a disabled person, Nongsiej said one such person of West Khasi Hills District was employed in one of the departments in the district. However, even after thirteen years of service, he was still employed as a casual employee.

He urged the West Khasi Hills District Parents Association for Disabled (West Pad), to take up the issue with the authorities concerned and aid the disabled person.
