SHILLONG: A total number of 1400 plus students will be appearing in the State Entrance Test (SET) scheduled to be held on July 12 to select candidates for the MBBS and BDS seats reserved for the State under the Central Pool.

“We have taken all possible steps to ensure that there is total transparency in the entrance test for the MBBS seats,” a senior official of the Health department informed on Sunday.

According to senior government official, they would be giving due weightage to both the entrance test and also to the marks secured on Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) in the 12th Science examination.

The senior government official said that 60 percent of the allotment of the seats will be based on the entrance test while the remaining 40 percent will be based as per the total percentage of marks in PCB.

“The State Reservation Policy will be taken into account before the allotment of seat,” a senior government official said. When ask about the announcement of the result of the entrance test, the official informed that the announcement of the result will take some time since they would also have to prepare the merit list on the basis of the percentage of marks.

“We would announce the result once the Government received the allotment of the seats under the Central Pool. Every year a total number of 56 seats are allotted to the State,” a senior government official informed.

“We are likely to hold the entrance test on July 12,” Health and Family Welfare department Minister AL Hek informed on Saturday.

He said that the department is still awaiting the allotment of the seats under the Central Pool reserved for the State. Hek also allayed all doubts about genuineness of this State entrance test.

Earlier during the recently concluded re-assembly budget session, Hek informed that the Union Ministry of Health and Family had issued an instruction on February 27 that the selection of candidates for nomination against central pool seats will be made by the beneficiary of the States on the basis of the entrance test to be conducted by the concerned State Government.

“Following the above directives, the Government has no other option but to comply with the instruction keeping in mind the Medical Council of Indi’s Regulation and the interest of the student as a whole,” Lyngdoh said. Earlier, UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh said that the State Government should keep off his hands from holding of the entrance test for the MBBS seats reserved under the Central Pool for the State.

“I am strongly of the view that the entrance should be conducted by an independent body with no government interference,” Lyngdoh said that during the Question Hour in the Assembly on Wednesday.

He also suggested that the answer scripts should be kept in a ‘safe custody’ so as to allow the students to have a re-look on the answer scripts once there is an announcement of the result.
