NONGPOH: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union North Khasi Hills district unit on Tuesday pulled down a ‘Welcome to Guwahati’ signboard erected at Khanapara in Meghalaya by Assam-based institutions.

The KSU unit, led by their general secretary Vincent Makri and publicity secretary Paul Wahlang first inspected the site where the signboard had been erected and later pulled down the same.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Makri said after receiving information about the illegal signboard in Khanapara area of Meghalaya, the Union took note of the same and approached the KHADC seeking action against the encroachment but there was no action from the Council which compelled the Union to pull down the signboard.

“Assam government has repeatedly encroached in different parts of the State especially in the borders areas but neither the Meghalaya Government nor the KHADC has taken any step to put a stop on such illegal act from the Assam side,” Makri stressed.

He also condemned the State government and the KHADC for failing to take initiative to resolve the border dispute and averred that the KSU will keep an eye on any illegal encroachment attempt to safeguard the land and jurisdiction of Meghalaya.
