CM kick starts vocational courses for the unemployed

Ampati, Tura centres ianugurated

SHILLONG/TURA: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma kicked off the mass enrolment drive for the unemployed youths who can now undergo six-month vocational training in masonry, carpentry, apparel making and scientific gardening with new technology at the Vocational Training Institute under United Nations Resource Centre (UNRC) at Ampati on Tuesday afternoon.
The UNRC Institute of Vocational & Entrepreneurship, Tura was also inaugurated at SMELC, Dakopgre on Wednesday by the Chief Minister.
Addressing the gathering at Ampati, the Chief Minister said that the special programme was being offered to the people with the support of the UN to enable them to grab the huge opportunities available for trained workforce in various fields.
He also urged the applicants to enrol for the training not simply for the diploma or certificates but to enhance their skills and knowledge.
The Chief Minister added that South West Garo Hills being a new district would soon have new buildings and infrastructure and only those who have passed the training and availed certificates in masonry and carpentry would be given work in the construction of these projects. Similarly those who would successfully complete the training in apparel making would be assisted in setting up their own apparel making units.
Addressing the gathering in Tura on Wednesday Sangma said the programmes of the government are designed to bring socioeconomic and transformative changes in the state.
He also informed that the cabinet has approved proposals of three polytechnic centres at Shillong, Tura and Jowai to be turned into centres of excellence.
“The Rs 500-crore-project for 150 centres of excellence across the state will provide immense potential to the youth as each centre will target 2500 students,” he said.
“This will ensure (supply of) skilled workforce and attract companies to invest in the state besides assuring employment within the state to the youth,” he added.
He also urged the youth to partner with the state government on various projects and stressed on dignity of labour to be imbibed. Executive Director, UNRC NER, Dr Aswini Sarma, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Pravin Bakshi, CEM, GHADC, Alphonse A Sangma, among others were present at the inaugural function.
