SHILLONG: Ri Bhoi police on Wednesday arrested a village headman and four VDP members for assaulting a resident identified as Emmanuel Marak of Nongsdier village in Ri Bhoi district, who succumbed to the injuries in the Shillong Civil hospital on Wednesday.
Ri Bhoi police chief CVS Reddy said that on June 19 the five accused had apprehended some minors with dendrite and after giving them a thrashing the minors revealed that they had got the dendrite from Marak.
Reddy said, “Based on the allegation of the boys, the five people including the headman went to the house of Marak and assaulted him badly.” Later he was admitted to the Shillong Civil Hospital.
The arrested persons have been identified as Brik Mukhim, headman of Nongsdier village, Gesterfield Langstieh, John Nongrum, Iengskhem Shylla and Shemphang Lyngdoh.
Reddy said that the village authority did not bring the incident to the notice of the police. He said Marak was working as a cable operator in the area.
The FIR in this regard was lodged by the wife of the deceased.
