Handover of land awaited
SHILLONG: Delay is, least to say, synonymous to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building which is now proposed to come up at a site at Mawdiandiang.
According to official sources, the Assembly Secretariat is seeking procurement of a proposed land measuring around 50-90 acres at Mawdiangdiang for the construction of the Assembly building.
After mulling over several sites in the city for the construction of the Assembly building, the State is now looking towards Mawdiandiang in order to avoid further congestion in here.
The Assembly Secretariat is awaiting the handover of the government land.
The High Power Committee of the Assembly had earlier zeroed in on a few plots of land at Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township area, 14 km from city, for construction of the new Assembly building.
The Committee has suggested that the new Assembly should be constructed near the office of the Home Guards and Civil Defence at Mawdiangdiang or in adjacent plots.
Once the Assembly Secretariat gets possession of the land, the State Government would approach the Union Government for sanction of funds for construction of the Assembly complex.
The Speaker had inspected several sites in the city, but the decision of constructing the House here was finally abandoned in order to prevent additional chaos due to the ever-growing traffic congestion in the city.
A new assembly building is the need of the hour since 13 years have passed after the heritage Assembly building was gutted by fire, the Meghalaya Assembly still sits in the temporary building at Rilbong.
