TURA: An assistant commandant of Meghalaya police has been arrested and sent to jail after an alleged molestation attempt on a newly-recruited constable at the battalion headquarters in Goeragre, near Tura on Sunday.

The assistant commandant of 2nd MLP Battalion, G M Marak (54), has since been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated.

According to police sources, a group of lady constables under training in the battalion headquarters were engaged in menial work on Sunday when one of them was called by the assistant commandant to his official quarters. The senior police official then allegedly tried to make unwelcome advances towards her and grabbed her hand.

The ruffled woman recruit constable immediately came away and reported the matter to the Commandant of the Battalion, Aditya Goenka, who directed her to file a police complaint of molestation against her officer in Tura police station.

“An FIR was lodged against the officer by one of the woman recruit constables and we have accordingly taken action by arresting him. He has since been sent to jail on a 14-day judicial custody,” informed West Garo Hills district police chief Mukesh Kr Singh.

The accused, who has been recently promoted to the post of assistant commandant, has also been suspended.
