SHILLONG: With just a few weeks left for the expiry of extension of six months granted to GHADC, the State Government is planning to give another six-month extension.
Earlier on January 8, the State Cabinet had given the nod for extension of six months to GHADC whereas the elections were held in February last for KHADC and JHADC.
Subsequently, the Government has notified the extension of six months for GHADC and this six-month period will expire on August 18.
If the first extension was given to GHADC pending the peace pact with ANVC and ANVC-B, there is no specific reason for the move on the part of the Government to extend GHADC for another six months except the view that the time is too short for holding elections.
An official source said that as per rule, there is no problem constitutionally in granting extension to the Council for one year.
The source added that the file related to the matter is still with the District Council Affairs Minister HDR Lyngdoh.
The first extension of the GHADC turned futile as the final peace pact with ANVC was not signed in time to facilitate ANVC cadres in taking part in the election.
