Man commits suicide after killing wife
Aizawl: A 29-year-old man allegedly killed his 32-year-old wife before committing suicide at Kawnpui in Kolasib district, police said on Thursday. Jerry Lalnunpuia and his wife Zoduhawmi, who had a three-year-old daughter, had hea ted arguments in their house and the husband dragged the wife to outside the village on Wednesday. When neighbours reached the outskirts of the village, they found the body of the husband hanging inside a garden hut and later found the body of the wife nearby. Zoduhawmi had sustained several injuries on her head, police said. (PTI)
2,432 militants arrested from 2012 to 2014 in Manipur
Imphal: A total of 2,432 militants have been arrested by the Manipur Police between April 1, 2012 and July 18, 2014, state Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds the Home portfolio, said. A total of 17 militants were arrested from outside the state, Gaikhangam told the Assembly last evening in reply to a question from opposition member L Ibomcha of NCP. He said Rs 61.86 lakh was seized from the arrested militants, 1,154 of whom are in judicial custody. The rest have been released on bail. Of the total amount seized from the militants, Rs 50.81 lakh is with the police because the cases are still on in various courts in the state and the rest have been deposited with the state government, he added. 30 people fall ill after eating fermented soyabean
Aizawl: At least 30 people were taken ill in Aizawl after eating fermented soyabean, Mizoram health department officials on Thursday said. Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma, Nodal Officer for the state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme said that 35 people have reportedly eaten the fermented soyabean out of which 30 were given medical treatment in different hospitals across the city. “We suspected bacterial contamination rather than chemical contamination as five people who ate the soyabean after cooking were not taken ill,” Lalmalsawma said. He said that the samples of the fermented soyabean were taken and sent to the microbiological laboratory and also to the state forensic science laboratory of the Police department. Reports said that two persons were treated at the ICUs in two hospitals here while the conditions of the rest of the victims were described as stable. The reports said that the fermented soyabean was purchased by officials of the SCERT department from one of the employees. (PTI)
Encephalitis diagnosed in Tripura
Agartala: After West Bengal and Assam, three cases of encephalitis were detected in Tripura. The state government has issued alert against Japanese encephalitis today, after detection of the virus in the blood samples of three children who have been undergoing treatment in Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC). According to report, all three cases of encephalitis were initially treated as malaria but in second phase of blood test among the long suffering patients have been detected Japanese encephalitis. Incidentally, all three encephalitis suffering children were hailed from Chowmanu, Gandacherra and Amarpur, worst affected of vector borne diseases. The health department issued emergency notice for all health centres and hospital last evening to collect the blood sample of long suffering fever patients of the state and send them for encephalitis test. Since May, more than three lakh people including children of Tripura has been suffering from various vector borne diseases like malaria, entities, measles and stomach upset for long time. So far officially, death toll reached to 80 though non-official figures of death recorded by NGOs and missionary organisations touched around 200. (UNI)
Govt plans to set up Sports University in Manipur
New Delhi: The government plans to set up a Sports University in Manipur as part of its development programme for the North-Eastern region, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.
Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Minister for Development of North-Eastern Region V K Singh said provision has been made in the Budget for 2014-15 for setting up a Sports Univerity in Manipur.
The government is discussing how to make programmes for North-East more effective and “how to ensure North-East gets attention, it deserves,” he said.
The Minister said shortcomings in detailed project reports (DPRs) submitted by state governments and delays in techno-economic clearance/vetting of DPRs by the line ministries or central public sector undertakings are some of the reasons for more time being taken in getting sanction and funds released.
Also, non-submission of timely and complete documents like utilisation certificate, work plan and inspection report, and delay in tendering process are other reasons.
During 2013-14, Rs 850 crore was allocated to eight North Eastern states from the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources. Of this, Rs 237.14 crore went to Assam and Rs 116.87 crore to Arunachal Pradesh, Singh said.
He said Meghalaya got Rs 90.70 crore, Nagaland Rs 87.90 crore, Manipur Rs 86.77 crore, Tripura Rs 77.81 crore and Sikkim Rs 76.14 crore.
Besides, Rs 698.05 crore was allocated to North Eastern Council (NEC) with highest amount of Rs 119.61 crore going to Nagaland, he added. (PTI)
50 Naga artists to participate in Edinburgh Military Tatoo
Kohima: A total of 50 Naga artists would be participating in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, Scotland from August 1 to 23. The Nagaland contingent left today to participate in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo under sponsorship of the state government, Chief Minister TR Zeliang informed the State Assembly here today while replying to a starred question raised by Congress MLA C Apok Jamir. Zeliang informed that the total budget allocation for the tour is Rs 164.11 lakh while the total composition of the team is 50 comprising of 45 performers and five officials and production team. The CM said the government remains committed towards promoting Nagaland to larger world community with genuine efforts to encourage tourism and soften bottlenecks faced by our guests. He said promoting Nagaland at the seat of the commonwealth of the United Kingdom through the exposure of talented Naga youth is a unique opportunity that holds positives for both- the participants and the state.
