Garo Customary law controversy

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday said that he has no role in the move to table the customary law which defines Garo in GHADC.

Asked about the criticism of GNLA in this regard, the Chief Minister said, “I am not even aware what was happening in GHADC and nobody discussed it with me”.

Earlier, the pressure groups and Opposition stalled the move of the Congress-led EC in GHADC over the steps to include certain points in the Bill which aims at recognizing any person born of a non-Garo mother and a Garo father as a Garo. In the same way, a person born of a Garo mother and a non-Garo father would also be recognized as a Garo.

According to the Chief Minister, the framing of the customary law is the culmination of a long exercise.

However, the critics questioned the timing of tabling the Bill at a time when the scheduled tribe status of Chief Minister and his brother and Cabinet Minister Zenith Sangma is under question since a petition is pending with the SC.
