Districts battle it out in Subroto Cup

SHILLONG: The State Level Subroto Mukherjee Cup 2014 began on Monday at the JN Sports Complex, Polo.
A total of 594 young footballers will participate in the tournament featuring the best school teams from each district in three categories – U-17 girls, U-14 boys and U-17 boys.
The winning team from each category will go on to represent Meghalaya at the national level tournament later in the year.
The competition will end on August 2.
The opening matches on Monday all featured teams from Garo Hills.
In the U-17 girls division, South West Garo Hills beat East Garo Hills 1-0 thanks to a 21st minute goal from Balkime M Marak.
An U-17 boys fixture followed where South Garo Hills defeated South West Garo Hills also by one goal to nil. Pillon Ch Marak was the scorer (28th minute).
In the last game of the day, one goal each from Walsimbirth Marak (52nd) and Niksrang Sangma (55th) helped East Garo Hills overcome a one-goal deficit to beat South Garo Hills 2-1.
SGH had taken the lead in the 18th minute through Senual Marak before the situation of the match was reversed.
