TURA: Several college unions of Garo Hills including the Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU), Mendipathar College Students’ Union (MCSU) and the Phukan Memorial College Students’ Union (PMCSU), Dalu recently met at Tura Government College here to discuss the various grievances being faced by colleges in Garo Hills.

One of the major issues discussed during the meeting was the enhancement of scholarships for the students.

“The scholarship which amounts to merely Rs 3000/- to 4000/-, is not enough for the students. Students of other states are getting much higher scholarship amounts and accordingly the amount should be enhanced to a minimum of Rs 20,000/- or more so that it can meet our various educational needs,” the college unions said.

Demand for setting up of the Office of the Deputy Director of Higher and Technical Education

Stating that the students of Garo Hills do not always find time to travel to Shillong to address the problems and needs of the college, the college unions have also demanded the setting up of the Office of the Deputy Director of Higher and technical Education in Garo Hills.

A memorandum with respect to the matter has also been submitted to the State Government.

There are not many nodal offices of education and other departments in Garo Hills.

According to the memorandum, the creation of office of the Deputy Director of Higher and technical Education in Garo Hills will help to address the concerns of students from Garo Hills who are pursuing higher and technical studies.
