Guwahati: As the Assam’s assembly’s budget session starts on Monday, the ruling Congress is likely to issue a three-line whip to its members, apparently to tame its dissident legislators who had threatened to play the role of a ‘constructive opposition.’ The Budget session will continue till August 29.

Congress sources said party whip and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka will issue a three-line whip to its members to toe the party line.

“This is to ensure that the dissident MLAs do not indulge in anything that may go against the party interest. It is also to ensure that the finance bills are passed with requisite support,” the sources said.

The three-line whip will be issued to strictly enforce party discipline in the House.

“Under no circumstances the party will tolerate any MLA acting against the interest of the government,” the sources said.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was held on Sunday.

At the CLP, party whip Nilamonisen Deka will brief the legislators on their role during the session. All the MLAs, including those from the dissident camp, will be invited for themeeting.

A few days back, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had dropped two rebel ministers – Ardhendu Dey and Siddique Ahmed. Leader of the dissident camp Himanta Biswa Sarma had also resigned from the Gogoi cabinet.

The dissident legislators have been demanding a change in leadership, but the AICC has not yet responded to their demand.

The ruling Congress has 78 MLAs in the 126-member assembly. (UNI)
