UMIAM: The much-hyped Orchid Lake Resort, Umiam in Ri Bhoi District has been functioning without a full-fledged general manager for the past one year leading to many hiccups in the smooth functioning of the Resort.

The 24-rooms Orchid Lake Resort, run by the Meghalaya Tourism Department, is housed within the Umiam Water Sports Complex on the banks of the scenic Umiam Lake.

According to official sources, the general manager of Pinewood Hotel, Shillong, is assigned with additional charge of Orchid Lake Resort and due to the high profile nature of visitors including VVIPs & VIPs at the Hotel from time to time, the general manager of Pinewood seldom visits the Resort and simply runs the show from Shillong.

Another major problem that has come up for the management of the Resort is the sudden demise of the accountant recently who was second in command and overlooking the day to day running of the Resort.

For any requirements in the Resort, the staff have to rush to Shillong thereby handicapping the functioning of the Resort.

According to information provided in the official websites of the MTDC, the Resort provides water sports facilities such as kayaking, water skiing and boating with well furnished suits, deluxe rooms and regular rooms and newly constructed swimming pools.

The Resort will not be able to live up to its standard unless a full fledged general manager is appointed by the authority concerned, an upset official said.
