SHILLONG: The UDP has demanded immediate implementation of the Mines and Mineral Policy, 2012.

“We fail to comprehend why the State Government has not yet introduced the policy even after it was approved,” UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy said in a statement here on Wednesday. “The introduction of the policy will pave the way for a balanced approach to streamline the entire gamut of coal and mining of other minerals in the State in accordance with the law,” he said.

The UDP president said that the judicial stay on coal trading in Meghalaya has been welcomed by several quarters in the state, all in favour of providing succour to the depleting environment and its other varied sub-structural bodies. “However, when, escalating into serious law and order situations in various parts of the State, the UDP cannot remain passive for too long, particularly when a question of fundamental right under Article 19 and 21 of the Constitution has been contravened,” he said.
