There is dissidence, admits Deborah

SHILLONG: As the rumblings within Meghalaya Congress gaining momentum with a section of Congressmen under the leadership of MPCC chief DD Lapang demanding removal of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Congress high command has decided to send AICC general secretary in-charge Meghalaya Luzinho Faleiro to the State to take stock of the situation.

“Faleiro will arrive here on August 13 to discuss the issue within the party leaders,” MPCC working president Deborah Marak said here on Thursday.

Faleiro will meet all the Congress MLAs, party functionaries and workers to discuss several issues including the rumblings.

It may be mentioned here that some dissident Congress leaders led by Lapang had already met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and put forward their demand for removal of the Chief Minister.

Lapang was accompanied by two dissident ministers — Prestone Tynsong and HDR Lyngdoh — besides former Speaker M M Danggo.

While admitting that there is a dissidence in the party, Marak said, “The situation is serious this time since the MPCC chief himself is leading the group.”

“If there is a problem, definitely there will be a solution,” Marak said.

Asked if the MPCC will take action against MLAs who frequently revolt, she said that in democracy everyone has the right to express his or her views.

Meanwhile, sources informed that the rebel leaders recently held a meeting in Kolkata airport, but the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma came to know about their meeting from the intelligence agencies.
