SHILLONG: Former KSU organising secretary Richard Jana Nongbet (45) of Nongshilliang was found murdered inside the rented house of one Ms Melvyn Kharwanlang Lyngdoh at Pdeng Shnong near Lumshyiap community hall on Thursday evening.

Police said that the deceased, who had contested the Assembly poll in 2003 from Lyngkyrdem constituency, was stabbed to death.

“We have detained Ms Melvyn for interrogation,” East Khasi Hills police chief M Kharkrang said.

Meanwhile, sources revealed that both the deceased and the lady were in inebriated condition.

According to sources, the lady had initially called 108 to shift the deceased to the hospital. Melvy had claimed that Nongbet became unconscious after he fell down on the floor.

However, after seeing the deceased lying in the kitchen, the 108 attendant suspected some foul play and refuse to shift since he was already dead.

After receiving the information, Kharkrang along with SP City Vivek Syiem rushed to the spot.

Police found a bottle of liquor in the kitchen which suggested both of them were having drinks together.

Police also suspected that the knife which could have been used for the murder might have cleaned.

Police, meanwhile, handed over Melvy’s 12-year-old daughter to Childline.

The body of the deceased was shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital for post-mortem.
