Two GNLA rebels killed in Assam encounter

Guwahati: Two suspected GNLA militants were killed in an encounter that took place during a joint operation of 19th Dogra Regiment of Army and Assam Police with a group of GNLA extremist at Khangkhal under Kukurkata outpost under Krishnai Police Station in Goalpara district on Thursday around 2.30am.

The GNLA cadres were yet to be identified. Army and Police had recovered two 7.65 pistol with three magazines, three HE-36 Grenades and one IED from the incident site.

Probe ordered: Meanwhile, the East Garo Hills Police have ordered an inquiry into the recent incident in which a suspected GNLA militant — Bishnu M Sangma, who was in judicial custody, escaped from civil hospital in Williamnagar.

East Garo Hills SP Davis Marak said that the inquiry would conducted by Additional SP RGG Momin and based on the findings of the report necessary action will be taken.

This is not the first instance when a militant has been able to escape from the police custody as a top Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebel Kennedy T. Sangma had also escaped from the prison ward by scaling the wall of Tura Jail last year. Kennedy Sangma was booked under Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act and was wanted by state police for his alleged involvement in extortions, kidnappings and murders. (With inputs from Our Reporter)
