Purno Sangma takes ‘toilet scam’ to Delhi darbar

New Delhi: NPP supremo Punro A Sangma has urged the Centre to order an inquiry into ‘toilet scam’ in Garo Hills besides seeking a probe into misutilization of fund granted under the Centrally- sponsored schemes like MGNREGA, SSA, BRGF.

In a letter to Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayti Raj and Drinking Water & Sanitation Nitin Gadkari, Sangma said that crores of rupees have been siphoned off on toilets in schools which do not exist on the ground.

“I would like to bring to your notice regarding some cases of misappropriation of Central funds by the State Government of Meghalaya in my constituency,” Sangma, who represents Tura in Lok Sabha, said in his letter.

The instant case relates to utilization of funds received under Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) for construction of toilets, the former Speaker said.

“You will be shocked to know that the toilets in some of the schools in East Garo Hills were shown as constructed in the records of the district administration, but actually no toilet was constructed in these schools,” he said.

The fund was released to Meghalaya Rural Development Society (MRDS) to the tune of more than Rs. 5 crore for construction of 691 school toilets.
