TURA: Tura witnessed a mad rush for fuel on Thursday afternoon as news spread about fuel depots opening up for business but customers were in for shock when they approached banks to withdraw money.
The State Bank of India (SBI) opened up for business for the first time since Monday but the financial news was not good as several branches reported lack of money to replenish their stock resulting in empty counters for withdrawal of payments.
The only branches that were able to provide some financial dealings were the main and evening branches of SBI in Tura.
Several branches of SBI in the rural areas remained closed for absence of workers and funds.
“No fresh supply of money has come in from Guwahati RBI and it is unlikely to do so until August 15. Things will be better only by next week,” revealed a senior banking official from the Regional Branch that monitors the rest of SBI branches in Garo Hills.
The fuel stations in Tura opened up for the first time in two days leading to a mad rush by consumers.
Police had a harrowing time in directing traffic and ensuring normal flow of vehicles through the fuel stations that witnessed traffic jams stretching close to a mile in some of them.
