SHILLONG: While armed women constables are deployed in and around the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly premises when the House is in session to cater to the security of ‘VVIP’ and ‘VIP public servants’, the general public are only provided with lathis-wielding women constables, and that too, in the late evening hours as was evident at Zig Zag and Rilbong on Thursday.

The women constables were seen patrolling the area on the eve of Independence Day without any vehicle escort or male police personnel accompanying them, raising questions over the security of the women constables themselves in case of any eventuality.

Sources informed this scribe that over 40 women constables were assigned night duty on Thursday to cater to the general law and order in view of the bandh called by the proscribed HNLC.
