One year on, State Human Rights panel yet to be formed

SHILLONG: A year after the State Cabinet gave its nod for the formation of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission it is yet to come to existence pending appointment of the Chairperson and other members.

The only development is that details of the salary and allowances of the Chairperson and other members have been finalized.

During the Assembly session held in March this year, the Government had tabled the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (Salaries and Allowances and other Terms and Conditions of Service of the Members) Rules, 2014.

It was on August 13 last year that the State Cabinet had approved the formation of the State Human Rights Commission.

A meeting held here on Thursday to shortlist the names of the Chairperson and three members of the Commission ended in naught as further deliberations were deemed necessary.

The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has decided to convene another meeting in September to discuss the matter.
