Two militants arrested in Assam
Guwahati: Two hand grenades meant for militant NDFB-Songbijit were recovered from a surrendered extremist of the outfit in Assam’s Chirang district, while a cadre of National Santhal Liberation Army was nabbed with a pistol in Kamrup (Rural) district, a top police officer said. “During an operation by police in Bengtol area last night the surrendered ultra – John Daimary alias Jayanta Daimary – was apprehended with the four grenades,” IGP LR Bishnoi told PTI. Daimary was an arms supplier for National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Songbijit and was carrying the explosives for the outfit from Dimapur in Nagaland, he said. The NSLA cadre identified as Uttam Hansda was picked up from Chaygaon area with a 7.65 mm pistol, two rounds of ammunition, one magazine and a mobile hand set, he added. PTI
Bomb blasts in Imphal
IMPHAL: A bomb exploded here last night at Mantripukhri damaging the gate of a shop. No one was injured. Police said a bomb exploded at the gate of Manipur Diesels , Mantripukhri and the impact of the blast damaged the gate. As it was dark there were no one on the vicinity and the gate was closed. Police personnel rushed into the spot and conducted investigations. It was not yet known who were responsible for the blast. (UNI)
Mild quake shook West Tripura
Tripura: A low intensity earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale shook West Tripura district in Tripura, early on Monday. According to the Met department, the earthquake occurred at 0205 hrs. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. The epicenter of the tremor was at 23.9 degree North and 91.4 degrees East with a focal depth of 98 km. (UNI)
Constitutional amendment demanded to protect Arunachal tribes
Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh unit of BJP has demanded a constitutional amendment to delete the words “any Naga tribe” suffixed after the Nocte, Tangsa, Wancho,Tutsa and other tribes in the Scheduled Tribes list of the state. In a representation to the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual Oram recently in New Delhi, the party had stated that the tribes, residing in Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts, were facing identity crisis and were inconvenienced in various official works as they were not recognised by the Centre as separate entities from “any Naga Tribe”, a party release said here on Monday. The youths of these districts while appearing for UPSC and state Public Service Commission examinations were also facing problem because of the name, the representation said. (PTI)
Mizo Police deported 309 for violating ILR
Aizawl: Mizoram Police have deported 309 non-tribals who violated the Inner Line Regulations (ILR) during this year, state home department officials on Monday said. The officials said the ILR violators included those who entered and stayed in the state without valid Inner Line Permit (ILP), those who misused their ILPs and those who failed to extend their ILPs. The arrested non-tribals were produced before the local courts and were later on deported, the officials said. Provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873 required all non-tribals to acquire Inner Line Permits before entering north eastern states like Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Nagaland ACAUT condemn rebel group threats to media
Kohima: The Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland to termed the ‘timing and the threat made against a local English daily by Z Royim Yimchungrü, Acting President NNC in his Naga independence day speech August 14, as ‘unfortunate and highly condemnable.’ A press release from the ACAUT Nagaland media cell on Monday stated that ‘threat to media is nothing but an attempt to suppress the voice of the people, since freedom of press has always been emphasized as an essential basis for democratic functioning of a society.’ It added that the ‘threat’ appears to be an ‘overreaction’ and termed it ‘unfortunate’ that it was done in an Independence Day speech, ‘which is supposed to lay down their government’s aims & objectives and is the vision statement of any government.’ ‘The Acting President is answerable to the Naga people whether the threat against the particular daily is part of its vision,’ ACAUT stated. Nagaland Governor sees good days for state
Kohima: Nagaland Governor P. B. Acharya has observed that good days for the people of the State are imminent and said one should be in a position to deserve before he desires. Addressing the Sri Krishna Janmasthami celebration at Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Dimapur yesterday, the Governor acknowledged that the northeastern states deserve credit for all religious practices. He, however, pointed out that there is a huge gap between the haves and have-nots even as Nagaland and other northeastern states are blessed with coal and other rich natural resources which are left untapped. While acknowledging that Nagaland is one of the states in India where all religions and communities of India live in harmony, Achraya said the present Government at the Centre is focusing on making Nagaland at par with other states of the country.
