Man runs car over 13 people sleeping on divider, held

New Delhi: A 30-year-old man was arrested for running his vehicle over 13 labourers sleeping on a road divider, killing one of them, in the capital, police said Monday. The incident took place near Nigambodh Ghat in east Delhi around 10.15 p.m. Sunday. Rishi Kumar’s car climbed onto the road divider and injured the 13 labourers sleeping there. Police said the accused was in an inebriated state while driving his car from west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area to West Vinod Nagar in east Delhi. Rishi Kumar, who was accompanied by his sister-in-law, is a property dealer and a resident of west Vinod Nagar. All the 13 labourers were rushed to three hospitals – Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, Sushruta Trauma Centre and Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital – where one of them, 20-year-old Iqraj, died of his injuries. Four others were treated for fractures, police said. Most of them were later discharged.(IANS)

Prasar Bharati policies ‘old, incorrect’: Sircar

Kolkata: Policies framed by the Prasar Bharati are “old and incorrect” and need to be reviewed, according to the public broadcaster’s Chief Executive Officer, Jawhar Sircar. Sircar was referring to media reports about the All India Radio’s ‘sacking’ of 100 casual RJs, above 35 years old, working at two Kolkata stations — FM Rainbow and FM Gold – earlier this month with a communique from the AIR director-general. “I was not consulted in this matter. The notice should not have been served on the first hand. But I will like to clear that nobody was sacked. It was quite mischievous. We are looking into the matter and the policy is under review,” he said. Incidentally, Sircar, soon after the ‘sacked’ RJs’ held a press conference in this connection, had tweeted: “We told the DG not to sack. (This is) some mischief! Policy is under review.” Asked what would be the status of those RJs if they fail to clear the voice modulation test, as suggested by the Prasar Bharati panel, Sircar said: “Let’s see… Every profession needs skill. After all the taxpayers’ money demands satisfaction.” “But I will like to stress here that windows are open and age is never be the criteria,” he added. In fact, the Prasar Bharati in a statement had stated that as a gesture of goodwill of the services of the casual announcers, RJs and anchors, its review panel has decided to subject the RJs — both casual and those aspiring to join the ranks, to a skill test. The RJs, it should be mentioned here, were recruited over the last two decades. (PTI)

Accord priority for linking rivers, Vijayakanth writes to PM

Chennai: DMDK, an ally of BJP in Tamil Nadu, on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accord priority for linking rivers to alleviate the sufferings of rain deficit and flood-prone states. “While states in north India have witnessed floods and resultant losses, several states face drought situation,” DMDK founder president Vijayakanth said in a letter to Modi. “As you are aware, the only solution to the problem of excessive and deficit rainfall is linking rivers”, he said. Referring to the infrastructure projects pursued during the previous NDA tenure, he said the Modi-led regime should give priority for linking rivers and get the project implemented quickly. BJP leader H Raja, who has been appointed as one of the national secretaries of the party, had on August 16 told reporters at Vellore in the state that “the government would take up the river-linking project across the country by next year.” The Centre had already allotted Rs 100 crore for a study of the rivers-linking project and it was expected to be completed in six months, he had stated. Woman, allegedly gang-raped, found hanging

Kolkata: The body of a woman who was allegedly gang-raped and murdered was found hanging inside her house Monday in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, police said. “The body was found hanging from the ceiling. We have sent it for post-mortem. Only after the reports come, we can say if she was sexually assaulted or murdered,” Superintendent of Police Sukesh Jain told IANS. Jain said there were no injury marks on the woman’s body. “There have been contradictory claims by the woman’s family. While her brother-in-law has claimed she committed suicide, her husband said she was raped and murdered. We are looking into the matter,” he said. No arrest has been made yet. With the woman’s husband being a local CPI-M leader, the party alleged the involvement of Trinamool Congress ‘goons’ and claimed she was assaulted and paraded naked before being raped and hanged. “Yesterday (Sunday), Trinamool goons entered her house and demanded Rs.12 lakh from her as a pre-condition for allowing her husband to return to the village from where he was forced to quit a year back. Later, they dragged her out of house, paraded her naked before raping and murdering her,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Rabin Deb said. Deb said a party delegation has left for Contai where they will hold a protest march demanding the arrest of the culprits. (IANS)
